The Golden Oak (Quercus alnifolia) is considered to be the national tree of Cyprus. An endemic species to the island, it is found throughout the Troodos mountains at altitudes from 400m to 1.750m above sea level.

A small tree or a tall shrub flowering in spring, it grows in dense clumps, and these woodlands have been designated priority habitat types by the EU (Directive 92/43/EEC) requiring proper maintenance and protection.

The Golden Oak is of enormous ecological significance for Cyprus and forms an important aspect of the island’s mountain areas.
